Which cars have the best gas mileage?

Reference - Businessweek:

Vehicles which were down in sales by as much as 5% last year have seen an eighteen percent jump in sales in the first half of 2008 because of the extraordinary gas prices. GM cobalt and Honda Fit are two such examples.

GM Cobalt
The tame little Cobalt has a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city/33 mpg highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars for sale in the U.S. And, with a base sticker of $15,010, it's one of the cheapest too.

Honda Fit
The tiny Fit (BusinessWeek.com, 8/21/06) from Honda (HMC), for example, which has seen a staggering sales increase of 67.4% in the first half of 2008, takes nine seconda to go from zero to 60, and merging into traffic is not for the faint of heart. But the $14,000 subcompact does get a combined 31 mph combined city and highway, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to the article, till a year back, the normal perception was that European car models are different and are not meant for US car market. However today, the reality has changed. More and more European car models are being imported into US, especially the small cars. Chevy is bringing in two models (aveo and beat) from its manufacturing base in S. Korea. The article also states that this leaves Chrysler at a disadvantage because it has almost no footprint overseas. Chrysler, it says, plans to import vehicles manufactured by Nissan.

A dozen new small cars to hit Indian roads by 2010!!

Pankaj Doval | TNN

New Delhi: Come 2010 and the Indian small car market is all set to hit fourth gear. Close to a dozen new small cars from big names, including Maruti-Suzuki, Honda, Volkswagen, Fiat, Ford and Toyota, are expected to hit the Indian roads, rejuvenating the market that accounts for as much as 75% of car sales.
As a fallout, the current
lot of small cars could possibly be headed for a phase-out, aided by hefty discounts as manufacturers try to reduce their stocks — a trend already evident in models like Maruti WagonR and Hyundai Santro.
The launches, set to spoil you for
choice, come at a time when carmakers globally focus on India which has emerged as one of the hottest destinations for new launches and volumes. The competition is set to hot up in the already bustling sector so those of you waiting to buy a small car can happily hold on for some more time, with good reason.
The new cars, many of which would also have variants loaded with latest features like automat
ic drive, ABS and airbags, will flow from almost the entire spectrum of carmakers present in India and be available in the Rs 3-5 lakh bracket (excluding the Rs 1 lakh wonder Tata Nano).
